Putting Together A Press Kit
by India McCarty –
If you’re looking for a way to get your name out there, a press kit is a great place to start! A press kit is a document with all your artist information on it, like upcoming shows, recent press, links to your music and an artist bio.
It’s a helpful promotional tool for single, album or tour announcements. You can also use it to shop your music around to people in the industry who you might want to work with.
Here are some basic things that you should include in your press kit!
Firstly, you need to decide what the focus of your press kit will be. Are you promoting an album or single? Are you trying to book a tour? Make sure you have a header that clearly states your focus. For example, if you’re promoting new music, your header should be something like [BAND] – [Title] – [RELEASE DATE].
Another important part of your press kit is photos. That should include album or single art and pictures of you!
Next, your artist bio! It can be hard to write about yourself, so you might ask someone close to you to write it, but if you do it yourself, here are some tips! It needs to be written in the third person and, obviously, should be interesting! Don’t just write about how you’ve been singing since you were a kid; everyone’s heard that story before. Write about what makes you unique! You should also share your accomplishments. It might feel like bragging, but no one will think you’re a narcissist if you talk about a big show you just played or a milestone you’ve reached. Lastly, you should close your bio with what’s coming next, whether that’s new music, a video or a tour!
Links to your recent press items are also an essential. It’s a good way to show that other people support you and your music and that you’re getting enough attention to warrant being written about.
Next, link people to your social media profiles and streaming pages. Something to keep in mind before sending people links to all your social media pages is the quality of your content. Are your pictures recent? In focus? Are some of your tweets a little off-color? Go through and delete anything you might not want journalists and other industry professionals to see. It’s always best to keep a neat social media presence!
Press kits are a great and efficient way to get information about yourself out to the right people, so get started! Even if you don’t have any specific needs in mind, it’s always good to have a basic press kit on hand. You’ll never know when you might need it!
