Nashville has long been a music publishing center. Traditionally, writers have assigned 100% of their publishing rights and income streams to music publishers. In exchange, publishers provide services and in some instances a weekly or monthly recoupable advance. If the business relationship flourishes- writers might eventually be leveraged enough to negotiate a 50% assignment, commonly referred to as a “co-Publishing” agreement. In effect, co-publishing relationships needed to be earned. But, the music industry has changed dramatically. Major recording companies and music publishers have reacted to declining sales trends by downsizing rosters and becoming more selective. The result is a growing sector of independent businesses owned by artists and songwriters that take a DIY approach. 94twenty works with these “indie” artist/writers early in their sales cycles, and is, therefore, perfectly positioned to offer publishing services on a co-publishing basis from the onset. This is wholly consistent with our mission to provide services at terms more favorable to artists and writers.
